LOCAL SAN DIEGO BAND GETS NATIONAL ATTENTION
San Diego resident Jon Jump, lead guitarist and chief songwriter for GUNNER JUMP, recently received the honor of being named one of the top 5 Finalists, in the Christian/Gospel category, by the Song of the Year ( http://www.songoftheyear.com/ ) songwriting contest. Song of the Year is an international songwriting contest supporting VH-1’s Save the Music Foundation. The Song of the Year judges are some of the biggest names in music including many Grammy Award winners.
Song of the Year is excited to recognize Jon Jump for his exceptional songwriting ability for the song “Remember Me”. Jon competed against songwriters from all over the world for this honor. When asked what inspired the song, Jon commented that “The song was inspired by Dismus, the good thief, who died with Christ. His last words to Jesus, “Remember Me”.
"California" received the following review on IndieInternational.com:
"California"is such a well written song! I love it. The whole album is wonderful! Can't wait to here more!"
Other reviews from IndieHeaven are as follows:
"Remember Me" is a good one guys, really enjoyed it. Your style is great and fun to listen to, and the songs are well written and performed. Stay committed to Him guys; you're on the way up!!" ~ Blessings, Duane
"Hey Guys! Love your music, very authentic.. very real.. Excellent all the way around! Keep up the excellent faith-work!" ~ Keith Mohr, President, Indieheaven
RadioIndy and their reviewers had this to say:
"Gunner Jump’s "TAKING CHANCES" is a Christian country rock EP brought to you by the powerful duo of Jon Jump and J.G. "Gunner" Franklin. The influence of ‘70s southern rock is a big part of the sound, as well as blues, funk, and R&B, and the emphasis on good songwriting is well apparent throughout. Gunner’s vocals are energetic, and he delivers the inspiring and well thought out lyrics nicely with a great rock feel. The arrangements showcase Gunner Jump’s great variance in what is largely an arena sound. There are some creative changes as well as instruments introduced that are clearly inspired by genres outside of Christian country rock. The production quality is good, so turn up the volume on this one. Highlights include "California," with its gritty lead guitar and great rock lyrics, and the addition of horns in the chorus adds a burst of power. "Remember Me" has a nice acoustic guitar progression, inspiring lyrics, and a great vocal performance. "You're My Girl" opens with an uncharacteristic drum machine and evolves into a beautiful love song. If you enjoy spiritual southern rock that takes a few chances, give Gunner Jump a try." ~ William and the RadioIndy.com Reviewer Team
Reviews of “California” on RedFizz.com stated:
"I like the Come Together/Satisfaction riff best, it nods pretty heavily to those songs, but it's got a countrified vibe that's fresh... the singing and playing is good, I didn't like the chorus/horn part. I like that you had horns, but that part of the song bogged down for me. Overall, strong talents here!"
"I liked it good song. I could see it on the radio!"
"I really like the fun groove. Thanks!"
Reviews of “Remember Me” on RedFizz.com stated:
"God/whatever, but you did a good job on this song. It’s kind of butt-rock, but how edgy is mainstream Christian rock going to be? Nice job dudes, rage on!"
"Nice, well done, nicely played and performed, verging on the edge of contemporary Christian."
"Crisp, good playing, great sound...That line, "I lived my life in disharmony", comes off just a bit awkward. It's a bit distracting. Has a Bon Jovi feel to it, but in a better way, and then transcends that comparison. Liked the way it went off the beaten path towards the end and mixed it up some."
"Sounds like 70's influenced classic rock/power pop infused with a country, blues, funk and R&B tinge and an emphasis on strong songwriting. Pretty clean vocals, crisp playing and recording, radio ready. The song itself is ok, it hints at more famous and more catchy tunes; like it tries to emulate them without ripping them off, but as a result, isn't as catchy. Great talent, just needs a better song."
"Not a bad Jesus song. A testimonial without being preachy or overtly riddled with biblical references. Good job."
* Why do you want to record and release your own music?
We believe wholeheartedly that we were meant to. It is what makes us truly feel happy and alive. We know where we belong and what we want to do, that it is our purpose for being here on this earth. We want to entertain others.
* Why are you looking for an independent label or major label deal?
Financial backing. Connections we don’t have. Support of the art of songwriting but not infringement upon our rights of ownership. Education on our way up but not forceful demands. A relationship that grows for the benefit of both parties; the band and the label/management. So, if a financial backer understands that we don’t care about filling our own pockets in the short term as much as we do about relieving ourselves of our debts and financial responsibilities so we are free to create and thereby gives us a stress-free environment conducive to making great music, we are more than happy to go out and perform for their benefit and ours.
* Is your stage name trademarked?
Yes
* Have you filed your songs for copyright protection?
Yes, along with the band name and the EP title.
* Have any of your songs been published? (If so, by whom?)
No
* Have you affiliated with a performance rights organization? (Which one? ASCAP, BMI, SESAC?)
Yes. ASCAP
* Do you have a written 'band agreement'?
Yes
* Who is your fan/customer?
We have been told by many people that we have a mass appeal. So, teens, the elderly and all those in between can listen to our music. We are a band that anyone can relate to on some level because we are all about having our lives and our loves manifest themselves in the music.
* What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
We write and sing about forgiveness, love, following your dreams, being a good person. The music is about universal themes, life in general.
* Do you write your own songs?
Yes. We are all about having our lives and our loves manifest themselves in the music. The process is not simply a linear one. It is very much a fluid, creative process that involves letting the songs come as much as writing the songs.
* Who are your musical influences?
Led Zeppelin, The Cult, Eric Clapton, Delta Blues, The Who, various country music etc. ~ Any influence, music, visual art or otherwise that speaks to us and helps us communicate our themes to others.
* How do you describe your music to people?
GUNNER JUMP is all about the songwriting. We don’t stick to any particular genre. The songs are simple, true lessons and observations that we have learned and experienced. Our music is cross-genre. It is a blend of our feelings, our woes, our passions and our lives. Something everyone can relate to on some level.
* What image do you think your music conveys?
One of everyday people following their dreams. One that everyone can relate to on some level and feel a connection with.
* What are your immediate music career goals? (Next 1 to 3 years.)
To make music full-time and still be able to pay our bills. We have responsibilities that we CANNOT ignore. But we do what we do because we are just as dedicated to fulfilling our responsibilities as we are to fulfilling our purpose, our passion and our potential.
* What are your long-term career goals?
To make music full-time and entertain others for as long as we can. Money and fame would be great but we simply want to do what we were meant to do and what we love to do, just as long as our responsibilities are met.
* How would you define the word "success"?
Success in life is individualistic. If a man is the richest man in the world but has no loved ones to share it with and is always stressing about how to get more then he is NOT successful. If a man has a comfortable home, a decent car, loves his job and has a loving family that truly cares about him, as he does them, and he is aware that family is the real priority, he IS a successful man.
* What live performance experience have you had? (Any industry showcases?)
Our most seasoned members, Joe Zalak and Jon Jump, have several years of national exposure and stage experience. To name a few: P.O.D., Korn, Foghat, Blue Oyster Cult, Missing Persons, Flock of Seagulls, Peter Case, Dramarama, Deep Blue Something, Dishwalla and Love Spit Love
* How do you rate your live performance ability?
We can deliver a power-packed, energetic and passionate live show because we are doing what we love and it shows.
Respectfully, GUNNER JUMP
